Reaching Out

On Thursday, November 30,2012 I was invited back to Villa Rica High School. I was very pleased to see the turn out of the students to the assembly being that it was voluntary. The focus for the assembly was to touch on the number of students that don't return to school after Christmas break. We talked again about the importance in graduation and staying on task even after graduation. The idea of starting an outreach program was discussed again and the students loved it.

Not only were the students very respectful to me,but they were attentive to one another and listened to what their fellow peers had to say. (top photo). After the assembly was over I had a few give a ways for the students that asked questions and shared their comments and concerns (bottom photo).

In my previous path of work, I work predominantly with African American students. I was extremely pleased to see the turn out of the African American males and their anticipation on trying to find as many ways possible to help them stay on track and graduate.

Pages Of Our Diaries

Over the past few months I had the pleasure of directing and producing a production titled Pages of Our Diaries. The production was a series of poems and songs that touched on very sensitive subjects that people go through that tend to prevent them from overcoming life obstacles. Some of  the pieces were original and some were written by the president, vice president of  College Girls Rock and myself. On Monday, November 12, 2012 the room was filled with family and friends of the cast, members and supporters of CGR, and students that came out to watch POD. During the intermission the audience was asked to write down something that they have never shared with anyone or something that happened to them in the past that they have been struggling with. The outstanding participation from the audience was greatly appreciated. the responses not only enhanced the purpose of the show, but it showed others that they were not the only ones  going through certain situations. This was the second year of Pages of Our Diaries and I am looking forward to year three.
